Religious behaviour may be linked to human mental survival processes.  This harkens back to prehistoric times when humans made snap decisions.  Living together in tribes also encouraged others to share beliefs. They would ascribe events like volcanic eruptions to a ‘person’, or a god. This could also explain the beginnings of believing in ghosts.
