The Strange And Terrifying Christmas Legend Of The Yule Cat

You may know the story of Krampus, but have you heard of the Yule Cat? It’s an Icelandic legend about a monstrous cat that lurks in the countryside during Christmas time. But why does it lurk during the holidays? It eats people who have not received new clothes to wear before Christmas. Some legends either say both adults and children, while others say only children are punished by the Yule Cat.Some other legends even say that it demands the clothing for itself.
It was in the 19th century when the Yule Cat was first documented, though it’s considered an ancient legend passed down by generations. So why would such a legend be created? Some say farmers would use the legend to get their workers to work faster. They wanted them to process the wool quickly before the Christmas season started. If they did that, their bosses would give them clothes for presents. Others say it was made to combat idleness in just children. Idle children that didn’t earn clothing were murdered by a giant cat, while those who worked earned clothing and were spared. The legend is really the dark side of Christmas traditions! Though there is a lighter version, some say that the Yule Cat will only eat the victim’s food. So instead of getting them, the cat would just steal from their table.
