‘Mary’ awakens to find a dark and frightening figure standing over her. She is terrified but cannot make her body move. ‘Jon’ is certain alien beings paralyze him in the middle of the night so they can conduct experiments on him. ‘Fran’ cannot open her eyes and escape from a terrible nightmare where someone is about to attack her even though she believes she is awake. What do these all have in common? They are all true, at least from each person’s perspective.
These rather bizarre reports are not new. History records many of these incidents and even Shakespeare references such an incident in one of his plays. Artists have created frightful paintings depicting ‘demons’ tormenting the sleeping; scenes taken from real life accounts. These experiences were considered encounters with the devil or evil spirits for much of man’s recorded history.
