But in the Middle Ages, the monsters seen in books and manuscripts were understood to be real, living in far-flung lands to scare missionaries and terrorise the seas to lure sailors to their deaths.
Now, a new book called Medieval Monsters details the many monstrous creatures that were illustrated in religious texts and illuminated travelling tales.
