The Mad Gasser Of Mattoon

Over the course of two weeks in autumn of 1944, residents of the small town of Mattoon suffered a series of unexplained gas attacks. Over twenty reports came in from the town’s citizens about of a mysterious gas leaving them nauseous, dizzy and, in some cases, vomiting blood.
The attacks were often accompanied by sightings of a tall, dark man, whom many believed to be the perpetrator of the attacks. The legend of the Mad Gasser of Mattoon was born but the case has remained unsolved ever since. Some have claimed that there was indeed an attacker whilst others dismiss the claims as an example of mass hysteria sweeping through a community at a time of stress.
