Halloween is celebrated by both children and adults and is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas (obviously). Where it was once probably considered to be somewhat niche, it’s now reached peak saturation.
It’s that time of the year when it’s acceptable to let your kids dress up as zombies, knock on stranger’s doors and eat way too many sweets. But it hasn’t always been this way. Trick or treating, or souling as it was previously called, involved going door to door dancing in exchange for food and drink, which sounds much more like hard work. Or more entertaining if you’re the one on the other side of the door.
If the household provided such food and drink they could expect good fortune, if not, they’d face some sort of trick. So next time you’re sitting perfectly still in the dark pretending you’re not in the house, remember, sweeties equals good fortune.
